The Short Version

Under Canvas Zion fits a Zion trip between March and November, and Dark Light Collection fits a trip in 2027 or later that centers on Bryce Canyon's night sky. The two stays sit in different corners of southern Utah, so pick the one near the park where you plan to spend the most nights.

  • Season: Under Canvas Zion is open March 12 to November 8 in 2026 and March 11 to November 7 in 2027. Dark Light Collection opens in 2027, with the opening month and rates to be announced.
  • Location: Under Canvas Zion is in Virgin, Utah, on the drive toward Zion. The glass pyramids sit near Bryce Canyon, much closer to Bryce than to Zion.
  • Power and Wi-Fi: Under Canvas tents have no outlets and no Wi-Fi, and a lantern with Universal Serial Bus (USB) ports handles phone charging. Each pyramid has app-controlled lighting and climate, and its built-in projector turns the glass into a cinema on cloudy nights.
  • Bathrooms: Every tent type at Under Canvas Zion has a private ensuite bathroom, and each pyramid has an en-suite bathroom.
  • Heat and cooling: Under Canvas heats adult tents with wood-burning stoves and has no air conditioning. The pyramids are designed with heated triple-pane glass and app-controlled climate.
  • Night sky: Under Canvas Zion calls itself one of the world's first DarkSky resorts and offers Stargazer tents and star parties. Each pyramid has a king bed positioned for sky-gazing and a personal deck telescope.
  • Booking status: Under Canvas Zion has published its 2026 and 2027 seasons. Dark Light Collection is taking founding deposits now.

Tents and Amenities at Under Canvas Zion

Every tent at Under Canvas Zion has a private ensuite bathroom with a shower, sink and flushing toilet, and every adult tent has a wood-burning stove. The six tent types are:

  • Deluxe: sleeps up to 2, with a private deck and complimentary firewood for the stove.
  • Stargazer: sleeps up to 2 and adds a night-sky viewing window above the bed.
  • Suite: sleeps up to 4, with a lounge area and a queen sofa-bed.
  • Deluxe with Kids Tent: sleeps 2 adults and 2 kids, with an adjacent kids tent holding two twin beds.
  • Stargazer with Kids Tent: the Stargazer tent plus the same adjacent kids tent.
  • Angels Landing Suite: sleeps up to 6 and has two private bathrooms, with a Suite tent joined to a Deluxe two-twin tent by a private deck.

Under Canvas supplies sheets, pillows, down comforters and blankets, plus towels, shampoo, conditioner and body wash. Bring any other toiletries, because none are sold at camp.

Power, Heat and Cooling

Under Canvas tents have no electricity and no outlets. Battery-powered fans and lanterns with USB plugs can charge at least two phones, and USB-C adaptors are available on request, first come, first served. Bring your own cable for anything other than USB, and ask for a powered battery if you use a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine or another medical device.

Heat comes from the wood-burning stove, and the camp provides wood, firestarter and matches. Kids Tents have no heating element, so pack warm layers for children sleeping there. There is no air conditioning, and the Grand Circle camps, Zion among them, use USB fans and misting systems that cool the tents a little.

Under Canvas has no Wi-Fi at any location, and cell coverage varies by provider. Download maps and anything else you need before you head up Kolob Terrace Road.

Food, Fires and Camp Life

Under Canvas Zion serves a seasonal, locally sourced menu, with al fresco dining facing the red sandstone cliffs. The camp offers nightly fires with complimentary s'mores, live music and star parties, and the menu includes celestial-themed food.

Mornings start with yoga, and kids activities run on site. The Adventure Concierge books rock climbing, horseback riding and guided hikes. Food is not allowed inside the tents, though beverages are.

Check-In, Quiet Hours and Dogs

Check-in runs from 3 p.m. to 1 a.m., with staff on site 24 hours, and check-out is 10 a.m. with no late check-out. Quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., and staff enforce them.

Dogs are welcome for a small nightly fee, and no other pets are allowed. Dogs may never be left unattended, and inside Zion National Park they are allowed only on the Pa'rus Trail. Buy your Zion park pass at the park entrance, since the camp does not sell them, or read the America the Beautiful Pass guide before you go.

Getting to Under Canvas Zion

Under Canvas Zion sits at 3955 Kolob Terrace Rd in Virgin, Utah, about a 25-minute drive from the main entrance of Zion National Park. From Interstate 15, the route has four steps:

  1. Take exit 16 onto UT Highway 9.
  2. Drive through the town of Virgin.
  3. Turn onto the Kolob Reservoir road, which becomes North Kolob Road.

Dark Light Collection Near Bryce Canyon

At Dark Light Collection, we are building up to 25 glass pyramids on private land about 15 minutes from Bryce Canyon National Park, opening in 2027. The property sits outside the park, about 10 minutes from Red Canyon with the Sevier River in view, and Zion National Park is about 1 hour away.

Each glass pyramid is designed with these features:

  • Triple-pane glass with a film that blocks 99% of ultraviolet light, heated so snow melts off.
  • Smart privacy glass that tints at a tap.
  • A king bed positioned for sky-gazing, an en-suite bathroom and a kitchenette.
  • A private deck with a fire pit, heated loungers and a personal telescope.
  • A built-in projector that turns the glass into a cinema on cloudy nights.
  • App-controlled lighting and climate, biometric locks and no shared walls.

The pyramids come in 8-meter and 9-meter bases, arranged in an Orion's Belt pattern with one smaller pyramid for every two larger ones. Each night, guests can download astrophotography taken from their pyramid's own coordinates. The concierge coordinates private guided astronomy sessions and golden-hour photography tours.

Nobody has stayed yet, so there are no guest reviews to read. Rates, the deposit amount and the opening month are unpublished, and founding deposits are open now. The Bryce Canyon location page has more on the site.

Which Stay Fits Which Traveler

Under Canvas Zion fits a Zion-focused trip inside its March-to-November season, and Dark Light Collection fits a trip in 2027 or later built around Bryce Canyon's sky.

Book Under Canvas Zion If

  • You are planning a Zion trip in 2026 or 2027. The 2026 season ends November 8.
  • You want a tent with a private bathroom and a wood stove.
  • You are bringing a dog and can plan around the Pa'rus Trail rule.

Skip Under Canvas Zion If

  • You need Wi-Fi, outlets or air conditioning in the room. Open Sky Zion has mini-split heat and air conditioning in every camp.
  • You want winter dates. The camp closes between November and March, so read Winter Glamping in Utah and Montana for stays open in the cold months.

Book Dark Light Collection If

  • Your trip is in 2027 or later and Bryce Canyon is the main park.
  • You want to watch the sky from bed through glass, with a telescope waiting on the deck.

Skip Dark Light Collection If

  • Your trip is in 2026. The pyramids open in 2027, so book Under Canvas Zion or one of the stays below instead.
  • Your itinerary covers Zion only. Under Canvas Zion keeps the drive into Zion short.

For a 2027 trip that covers both parks, split the stay: spend the Zion nights at Under Canvas Zion and the Bryce nights in a pyramid. For a Bryce-only trip, the Under Canvas Bryce Canyon comparison covers the camp closer to Bryce.

What Would Change This Answer

Two announcements would shift this verdict. If Dark Light Collection publishes its season and rates, a direct date and cost comparison becomes possible. If Under Canvas adds power or Wi-Fi to its tents, the camp would suit travelers who need to work from the road.
