Bryce Canyon in winter is worth the trip: the park is open all year, the main amphitheater overlooks are plowed first after storms, and snow settles on the hoodoos while the viewpoints stay quiet. The costs are nights below freezing, icy trails, no shuttle, and a handful of trails and roads that close for the winter.
The Case for Bryce Canyon in Winter
The park stays open 24 hours a day all year, and you need no advance reservation to enter. May through September are the busiest months, and Ruby's Inn promotes winter for its low seasonal rates and "practically no crowds."
Plan around five trade-offs before you book:
- Temperatures fall below freezing nearly every night from October to May.
- The park shuttle does not run in winter.
- The Wall Street side of the Navajo Loop and the Rim Trail from Inspiration Point to Bryce Point close all winter.
- The Lodge at Bryce Canyon, its dining room and the General Store at Sunrise Point close for the season.
- After a storm, the Main Road beyond Mile 3 can close for a day or more while plows work.
Winter is a poor fit if your trip depends on walking the Wall Street side of the Navajo Loop, sleeping at the Lodge or riding the shuttle. Those travelers should aim for the shuttle season, which runs April through mid-October. A storm just before a one-day visit would also change the plan: if the southern drive is closed on your only day, spend it at the plowed Bryce Amphitheater overlooks and save the higher scenic drive for another trip.
Winter Openings and Closures at Bryce Canyon
Bryce Canyon stays open through winter, and most closures follow the snow. After a snowstorm, the National Park Service (NPS) closes the 18-mile Main Road to traffic past the first few miles, usually for a day or more, until plows clear the higher scenic drive to the south. Roads stay shut until plowing is finished and conditions are safe.
Bryce, Inspiration, Sunset and Sunrise Points are plowed first, so the Bryce Amphitheater views stay reachable during those closures. The roads to Fairyland Point and Paria View close to cars all winter once plowing is needed. Hikers, cross-country skiers and snowshoers can still use both roads on foot or skis.
Services and Facilities in Winter
- Visitor Center: open daily, with museum exhibits, a bookstore, staff for trip planning and the 24-minute film "A Song of Seasons" on the hour and half hour. It is open on Thanksgiving, closed on Christmas, closes an hour early on Christmas Eve and opens an hour late on New Year's Day. In past years winter hours ran 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., so confirm current times on the park's hours page.
- Camping: North Campground is open all year. Sunset Campground closes from November into April, and the North Campground dump station for recreational vehicles (RVs) closes in winter.
- Lodging and food: The Lodge at Bryce Canyon and its dining room close, though rooms are often still available at the Sunset Lodge Unit. The General Store at Sunrise Point also closes.
- Restrooms: open at Rainbow Point, Farview Point, Sunset Point, the Visitor Center and North Campground. Restrooms at Inspiration Point, Peekaboo Loop and the General Store are closed.
- Shuttle and horse rides: The park shuttle runs April through mid-October. Horse rides end in late October and resume in April or May, depending on weather.
- Fees: The private vehicle entrance fee is $35 year-round (fees).
Winter Hikes and Snowshoe Routes
Many Bryce Canyon trails stay open in winter, and snowshoeing is allowed on every trail in the park. Two routes close for the whole season. The Wall Street side of the Navajo Loop closes because of extreme rockfall danger, while the Two Bridges side stays open year-round.
The Rim Trail between Inspiration Point and Bryce Point also closes all winter, because snow cornices form along the steep cliffs there. For a short visit, the park suggests 1 to 3 hours for the Bryce Amphitheater with easy or moderate hikes. With 4 hours or more, add the Southern Scenic Drive, a longer hike and a ranger program.
Traction and Snowshoes
After heavy snowfall, most day-hike trails need snowshoes. Once the snow melts and packs down under boots, trails turn icy and snowshoes may not grip well enough. Traction devices, from crampons to lighter slip-on types, are recommended across the park, especially in parking lots and on paved areas, and the bookstore in the Visitor Center sells them.
Skiing and Rentals
Cross-country skiing is allowed on routes above the rim, and skiing off the rim into the canyon is illegal. Snowmobiles are not permitted anywhere in the park. Outside the park, Ruby's Inn has more than 30 kilometers of groomed cross-country ski trails and runs a Winter Activity Center open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Ruby's Inn rents winter gear at these rates, and every rental requires a signed liability waiver:
- Skis or snowshoes: $15, or $10 after 1 p.m.
- Traction cleats: $10, or $7 after 1 p.m.
Skating on the Ice Ribbon costs $7 per person including skates, with hours set by weather and ice.
The Bryce Canyon Winter Festival and Ranger Programs
The Bryce Canyon Winter Festival takes place every February, hosted by Ruby's Inn and Bryce Canyon National Park, and the 2027 festival is scheduled for February 13, 14 and 15. Festival activities include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating and sleigh rides (events calendar). The program also has a people-powered sled race, painting and archery classes, crafting, puppet shows, a Hot Air Balloon Glow and tours for beginners.
The 2026 festival ran February 14 to 16. Snow-specific activities were canceled that year, and an archery competition replaced the cross-country ski competition. The weekend still offered ski tours and clinics, snowshoe tours, fat bikes, yoga, photography and kids' crafts (2026 recap).
Events may change with snow and weather, and the festival goes ahead regardless of snow conditions.
Ranger Programs in Winter
Ranger programs run all year at Bryce Canyon, though less often in winter. Snowstorms and windchills of 10°F or below typically cancel them. Stop at the Visitor Center for the list of ranger programs running during your visit.
Driving to Bryce Canyon in Winter
Driving to Bryce Canyon in winter means timing the scenic drive around storms and watching for ice on paved surfaces. The park sits at about 8,000 feet, and the coldest, snowiest stretch is usually December through February. Average lows in December and January sit in the mid-teens Fahrenheit, and the record low for January and February is -26°F, so read the Bryce Canyon weather guide for month-by-month figures.
For live road status, read the Alerts on the park's Current Conditions page before you drive in and again before you head south. If a storm has closed the southern drive, stay around the Bryce Amphitheater, where plowing starts, and check the Alerts again before trying the full road.
Put on traction devices before you step out at a viewpoint. Keep extra layers and water in the car on every winter drive.
Stargazing on Cold, Dark Winter Nights
Winter nights at Bryce Canyon are cold and dark, and the park was certified as an International Dark Sky Park in 2019. Bryce Canyon offers about 100 astronomy programs a year. The darkest skies fall during the week of the new moon or the week before, so build a trip around those dates if the night sky is your main goal.
From November to March, full moon hikes can become free snowshoe outings once the snowpack reaches 16 inches or more. Tickets are released online at 10 a.m. Eastern (8 a.m. Mountain), first-come, first-served, with a $1 processing fee per reservation, with details on the full moon hikes page.
Ticket holders should know:
- Check in at the Visitor Center by 3:00 p.m. on hike day.
- Children 7 and younger cannot join.
- Wear lug-sole boots or shoes.
- Expect cancellation for cloudy skies or temperatures below 10°F.
Dress for the cold before you head to a viewpoint. The stargazing at Bryce Canyon guide covers where and when to look up.
Places to Stay Near Bryce Canyon in Winter
Winter stays near Bryce Canyon fall into three groups: a campsite in the park, a room at the Sunset Lodge Unit, or a hotel just outside the entrance. North Campground stays open year-round, while Sunset Campground closes from November into April. Rooms are often still available at the Sunset Lodge Unit even though the main Lodge closes.
Ruby's Inn sits a little over a mile from the park's main entrance, with hotel rooms, RV and tent camping, a general store and three restaurants. Compare more choices in the where to stay near Bryce Canyon guide.
At Dark Light Collection, we plan up to 25 glass pyramids on private land about 15 minutes from Bryce Canyon National Park, with opening targeted for 2027. The triple-pane glass is heated for snow-melt, and each private deck has a fire pit, heated loungers and a personal telescope. Founding deposits for the Bryce Canyon pyramids are open now.
To plan Bryce Canyon in winter, pick your dates first, then check road status the morning you drive in.
Winter nights at Bryce drop below freezing, and the pyramids are designed with heated glass, a king bed positioned for sky-gazing and heated loungers on the deck.
