A Night at Lake McDonald Lodge Is Worth It for the Lakeside Setting

Lake McDonald Lodge is worth a night if you want to sleep on the shore of Lake McDonald with dinner and drinks on site. The rooms were built to an older standard. Air conditioning, elevators and televisions (outside the suites) are not available. For 2027 the lodge opens May 14 and closes September 30.

The lodge sits about 10 miles inside the West Entrance on Going-to-the-Sun Road, on the shore of the largest lake inside the park. It is the primary lodging on the west side of Glacier, and you walk into a lobby hung with animal mounts and framed by rustic log banisters. The lodge offers a dining room, boat cruises and evening ranger programs.

Who Should Book Elsewhere

  • You need an elevator. Main lodge rooms are on the second and third floors, and the lodge has no elevator.

The verdict flips if your trip falls outside the season, or if someone in your group cannot handle stairs or needs air conditioning. In either case, consider a stay outside the park.

Lake McDonald Lodge Rooms by Type

The 82 rooms at Lake McDonald Lodge are split between the main lodge, a row of cabins, Snyder Hall and the Cobb House. All rooms are rustic, with modest amenities that match the era they were built in. Recent renovations added some king and queen beds and upgraded a number of rooms and cabins.

Main Lodge

Main lodge rooms sit on the upper two floors of the three-story building, each with a private bathroom and parking in the main lot. Standard and deluxe rooms have one or two queen beds, and the booking list also includes a value lodge room. The lodge rooms and the cabins were both renovated in 2015.

Cabins

The cabins range from duplexes to six-plexes along a tree-lined path beside the lodge. Every cabin room shares a common wall and most share a small entryway, but there are no connecting doors between rooms. Each has a private bathroom, and parking is usually close by.

  • Small cabins: one or two double beds, or one queen.
  • Large deluxe cabins: one king or one queen, and a few add a sleeper sofa.
  • Large cabin suites, deluxe cabin suites and ADA cabin rooms also appear on the booking list.

Cobb House

The Cobb House holds three suites within walking distance of the main lodge. Each suite has a sitting area, a private bathroom, one queen bed, a sleeper sofa and a flat-screen television. An ADA Cobb House deluxe room is also available.

Snyder Hall

Snyder Hall is a converted historic dormitory with eight hostel-style rooms. Each has a double bed or twin bunk beds plus an in-room sink, and guests use a shared bathroom. Snyder rooms have no telephone or coffee maker.

In-Room Amenities

Rooms include a fan, an alarm clock, a hair dryer and an iron with ironing board. Rooms outside Snyder Hall also have a telephone and a coffee maker. Wi-Fi comes from a very limited hotspot, so download maps and trail details before you arrive. All rooms and lodge facilities are non-smoking.

Dining at Lake McDonald Lodge

Lake McDonald Lodge has three places to eat and drink plus a camp store. On opening day the restaurants start with dinner, and on closing day they finish with breakfast.

  • Russell's Fireside Dining Room recalls the building's hunting lodge origins. Breakfast is a full buffet or a lighter continental buffet, and lunch and dinner focus on local fare.
  • Jammer Joe's Grill and Pizzeria takes its look from Glacier's Red Buses. It serves lunch and dinner, including an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet, create-your-own pizza, soup, salads and sandwiches.
  • Lucke's Lounge pours Montana microbrews, wine and cocktails, with views across Lake McDonald.
  • The camp store sells snacks, drinks, supplies and grab-and-go food, with a gift shop alongside.

For current menus and hours, see the official Lake McDonald Lodge page.

2027 Season Dates and the 2026 Season

The 2026 season ran from May 15 to September 28, so the lodge is closed now and will stay closed through the winter. Glacier National Park Lodges notes that rates and dates may change without notice, so reserve on its Lake McDonald Lodge page or by phone at 855-733-4522.

The lodge opens a little ahead of Glacier's main summer season, which generally runs from late May through September. Most services in and near the park do not reopen until late May or early June, and higher trails can stay snow-covered until late June. Going-to-the-Sun Road is normally plowed to Logan Pass by late June, so a stay in the first weeks may not include a drive over the pass.

After the lodge closes, lodging inside the park is not available. Going-to-the-Sun Road typically stays fully open until the third Monday of October, weather permitting. The west-side gate then moves to Avalanche Creek or Lake McDonald Lodge, and the road beyond the gate opens to hikers and cyclists. In winter, the stretch from West Glacier to the lodge is usually plowed, weather permitting.

Activities Next to the Lodge

The lodge lists these activities:

  • The general store and gift store for supplies and souvenirs.
  • Lake McDonald Lodge Beach, one of the park's approved ceremony sites. The Glacier National Park weddings guide explains the permit.

There is no gasoline anywhere inside the park, so fill your tank before you enter. Electric vehicles can top up at the EV charger across from the camp store. For more on the water itself, see the Lake McDonald guide.

History of the Lodge

Lake McDonald Lodge began as the Snyder Hotel, a twelve-room guesthouse owned by George Snyder, which John and Olive Lewis bought in 1906. In the winter of 1913 to 1914, Lewis had a new 65-room hotel built on the site. Materials that could not be sourced locally were hauled from the depot in Belton and ferried nearly 10 miles up the lake.

The Lewis Hotel was decorated as a hunting lodge and served as a community gathering point, where the artist Charlie Russell could sometimes be found telling stories in the lobby. Lewis sold the property in 1930, and the new management renamed it Lake McDonald Lodge. The Swiss-style building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the animal mounts in the lobby keep the hunting lodge feel.

Staying Outside the Park Instead

Stay outside the park when Lake McDonald Lodge is full or closed for the season. Stay outside it, too, if your group needs air conditioning, an elevator or room for a pet. Couples can compare ranch resorts and lodges elsewhere in the state in romantic getaways in Montana.

Camping is another option inside the park. Avalanche, Apgar, Fish Creek, Many Glacier, St. Mary, Sprague Creek and Two Medicine are reservation campgrounds, and Apgar and St. Mary allow primitive camping year-round. The Glacier camping guide explains how each campground works.

At Dark Light Collection, we are building glass pyramids on private land within 15 minutes of Glacier's West Entrance and about 20 minutes from Lake McDonald, opening in 2027. Each pyramid is designed with a king bed set for sky-gazing, an en-suite bathroom, a kitchenette, app-controlled lighting and climate, and a private deck with a telescope. The Glacier pyramids page shows the layout if you want a stay outside the park with a view of the night sky. To book Lake McDonald Lodge instead, pick a room group from the list above and reserve on the official Lake McDonald Lodge page or call 855-733-4522.

After dark

After dinner at the lodge, the walk along the tree-lined path beside it is a chance to look up, and the Stargazing & Dark Sky Guide explains what to look for on a clear Montana night.
