The Lake McDonald boat tour is worth it if you want to see the lake from the water without hiking or paddling. It is a one-hour narrated round trip that runs in rain, snow and wind. Reserve through Glacier Park Boat Company by 5 pm the day before, or buy tickets at the dock on the day. Adult tickets cost $28.75 in 2027.

The Lake McDonald Boat Tour Verdict

The Lake McDonald boat tour is worth the fare if you want a narrated first look at the lake without lacing up boots or picking up a paddle. Glacier Park Boat Company guides cover the history and geology of the park's west side, including how glaciers shaped the valley. Forest and emerald-green water slide past while the boat heads out toward views of the Continental Divide.

Weather rarely cancels the tour. The boats are enclosed, so Glacier Park Boat Company calls off tours only for extreme weather events and refunds those in full at the ticket office. That makes the tour the steadier choice on a windy day, when watercraft rentals at the same dock can be cancelled as unsafe.

The tour runs from May 19 to Sept 29, with up to six departures a day. Pick it if you want a guided hour, a $14.35 child fare or an enclosed boat. The Glacier National Park with kids guide pairs it with easy family walks. Skip it if you plan to rent a boat from the same dock or want to hike from the water.

Lake McDonald Boat Tour Times for 2027

The Lake McDonald boat tour schedule has six daily departures, from 9:30 am to 7:00 pm, though only five run at each end of the season. The listed time is when the boat leaves the dock, so every arrival step below counts back from it.

Departure2027 dates
9:30 amJune 15 to Sept 29
11:00 amMay 19 to Sept 29
1:30 pmMay 19 to Sept 29
3:00 pm (ranger-narrated)May 19 to Sept 29
5:30 pmMay 19 to Sept 29
7:00 pmMay 19 to Sept 6

All six departures overlap from June 15 to Sept 6. In late May and late September only five departures run, because the 9:30 am tour starts June 15 and the 7:00 pm tour ends Sept 6.

The 3 pm tour is narrated by a National Park Service ranger, and every other departure has a Glacier Park Boat Company guide. Choose the afternoon slot if a ranger-led talk matters to you, and book it early because it is the only one of its kind each day.

Tickets and Prices for the Lake McDonald Boat Tour

Lake McDonald boat tour tickets can be reserved online or by phone, and same-day tickets are sold at the dock. Reserve on the Glacier Park Boat Company Lake McDonald page or call 888-611-0747. Reservations are recommended to hold a seat on the departure you want, and they close at 5 pm the day before.

After the cutoff, go to the dock and buy tickets in person. In peak season, walk-up tickets are extremely limited and typically sold from a waitlist.

Ticket2027 fare
Adult$28.75
Child (4 to 12)$14.35
Child under 4Free, ticket still required

Every passenger needs a ticket, including a baby, because federal rules cap the number of people on board. Children under 4 ride free but still count toward that cap on how many people the boat can carry. All tickets are round trip, and one-way tickets are not sold.

Changes and Cancellations

  • Cancel or change at least 3 days before the tour. Each cancelled ticket costs a $5 fee, and that includes the free child tickets.
  • Reservations made within 3 days of the tour are non-refundable.
  • To add a person, change the existing reservation, because the system blocks two bookings on the same day.

If the booking calendar shows 0 seats, that departure is sold out and the site suggests other times with space. Keep checking for cancellations, or join the waitlist in person at the ticket office on the day of the tour. The full policy sits on the Glacier Park Boat Company FAQ.

Getting There and When to Arrive

The dock and ticket office for the Lake McDonald boat tour sit behind Lake McDonald Lodge, on Going-to-the-Sun Road. Type Lake McDonald Lodge into your phone's map app before you leave town, because cell service and GPS are generally unavailable inside the park. From the parking lot, walk through or around the lodge and take the stairs or the walking path to the shore. The ticket office stands at the bottom of the stairs.

Glacier Park Boat Company sets the same countdown for every departure:

  • Parking lot: at least an hour ahead, plus another 30 minutes for delays at the West Entrance.
  • Ticket office: 30 minutes ahead, to collect your tickets.
  • Boarding: begins 15 minutes before departure.
  • Seat release: unclaimed seats are forfeited 10 minutes before the boat leaves.

Arrive late and the ticket office will try to fit you on the next tour with space that day. Tickets do not transfer to another day, so a morning booking leaves more later departures to fall back on if traffic holds you up.

June 15 to Sept 19:00 am to 8:00 pm
Sept 2 to Sept 299:00 am to 6:30 pm

The boats have no restrooms. Use the ones inside the lodge or the pit toilets at the west end of the parking lot before you board.

In 2026, vehicle reservations were not required anywhere in Glacier National Park, including the drive to Lake McDonald. Check the vehicle reservations guide before your trip. Glacier Park Boat Company asks visitors to carry a copy of their Reservation Confirmation at the entrance in case of seasonal traffic diversions.

On Board the DeSmet and the Glacier Lily

Each Lake McDonald boat tour runs on one of two boats: the 1930 DeSmet or the 1985 Glacier Lily. The DeSmet is the flagship of the Glacier Park Boat Company fleet and one of four of its vessels listed on the National Register for Historic Vessels.

The Glacier Lily was built by Scott Burch and takes its name from the wildflowers that grow in the area. It has soft seats for a more comfortable ride.

Seating on both boats is first come, first served. When the inside seats fill, the rest of the passengers ride on the outside deck. Join the boarding line early if you want an inside seat on a cold morning.

What You Can Bring

  • Food and drinks are allowed, but nothing is sold on board. Dispose of all trash properly.
  • Only trained service animals can board. Emotional support dogs count as pets and stay off the boat.
  • Firearms are not allowed on the boats, even with a concealed carry permit. Lock them in your vehicle before boarding.
  • Wheelchair seating fits one standard wheelchair on an outside deck. Call Glacier Park Boat Company at 888-611-0747 about availability before you book.

Who Should Skip the Tour

Skip the Lake McDonald boat tour if you want to hike from the water. The tour has no hiking options and no one-way tickets, so the boat brings you back to the lodge dock an hour after it leaves. For trails near the lake, the Lake McDonald guide covers other ways to spend the day.

Skip it too if you plan to rent a boat at the same dock. Kayaks, rowboats, paddleboards and motorboats go out from 10:15 am and must be back by 6 pm. A motorboat reaches Apgar Village in about 45 minutes, and you can refuel and swim there, while swimming from the motorboat itself is not allowed.

For two adults, the tour costs $28.75 each. A reserved double kayak costs $33.60 per hour with a two-hour minimum. The tour is cheaper for two adults, and the kayak gives twice the time on the water.

The verdict flips with the forecast. On a calm, dry day, adults comfortable with a paddle get more lake time from a rental. On a windy day, the tour is the booking that still runs.

Dinner and Evenings at Lake McDonald Lodge

Lake McDonald Lodge turns the tour into an evening, with Russell's Fireside Dining Room, Jammer Joe's Grill and Pizzeria and Lucke's Lounge just up the stairs from the dock. The lodge also hosts evening ranger programs, Red Bus tours and horseback rides. Take the 5:30 pm boat and eat afterward, or eat first and catch the 7 pm departure. The Lake McDonald Lodge guide covers its history, rooms and season dates.

Look for the animal mounts and rustic log banisters in the Swiss-style lobby before you head down to the water. If you want a base near the lake, the Dark Light Collection Glacier pyramids open in 2027 on private land about 20 minutes from Lake McDonald. Choose a departure from the schedule above, then book on the Glacier Park Boat Company booking page before reservations close the day before.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Lake McDonald boat tour?

The Lake McDonald boat tour is a 1-hour round trip from the dock behind Lake McDonald Lodge. Plan extra time around it, because Glacier Park Boat Company asks you to reach the parking lot at least an hour before departure.

Which boat tour is best in Glacier National Park?

For an hour on the water with no hike, the Lake McDonald boat tour is the pick, aboard the historic DeSmet or the Glacier Lily. It is narrated, runs in rain, snow, wind and smoke, and has no hiking options, so skip it if you want to hike.

Is the Lake McDonald boat tour worth it?

Yes, if you want a narrated look at the lake without hiking or paddling. A wet or windy day makes it a better pick, because the enclosed boats still run. Skip it if you plan to rent a kayak, rowboat or motorboat at the same dock, or if you want to hike, because the tour has no hiking options.

Can I visit Lake McDonald without a pass?

You can, if you pay the park entrance fee instead of using a pass: $35 per private vehicle in summer ($25 from November 1 to April 30), valid for 7 days. In 2026, no separate vehicle reservation was needed to reach Lake McDonald. Current fees are on the Glacier fees page, and the America the Beautiful Pass guide covers the annual pass.
