The best stargazing hotels in the United States sit in or beside certified International Dark Sky Places in Utah, Arizona, West Texas, the California desert and Idaho, and a Montana guest ranch adds guided telescope sessions. Pick by how dark the sky is first. Then pick by what the stay adds at night: a tent with a window over the bed, a nightly telescope session, or a guided tour.

Utah and Arizona Stays on the Grand Circle
Under Canvas says five of its Grand Circle camps carry DarkSky certification: Zion, Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon, Moab and Lake Powell-Grand Staircase. A glass-dome resort also sits near Bryce Canyon. The company began working with DarkSky International in 2020 and says Lake Powell-Grand Staircase became the world's first DarkSky-certified lodging property in August 2023.
The Stargazer Tent
The Stargazer tent is a Deluxe tent with a night-sky viewing window above the bed. It keeps the Deluxe tent's private bathroom, wood-burning stove and private deck.

Clear Sky Resorts Bryce Canyon opened in 2024 in Cannonville and puts guests in glass domes on about 80 acres, roughly 15 minutes from the park.

West Texas Stays Under the Big Bend Sky
The Greater Big Bend International Dark Sky Reserve in West Texas covers more than 9 million acres, and Marathon Motel & RV Park, in the Big Bend region, has its own telescope field. The reserve was certified in April 2022 and runs from Fort Davis to the Rio Grande. It was the first bi-national dark sky reserve, and Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park sit in its outer zone.
The motel says Brewster County is part of the three-county reserve. It also states that Marathon sits at about 4,100 feet with Bortle Class 1 skies and a naked-eye limiting magnitude of 7.6 to 8.0. The motel calls these some of the darkest skies in the lower 48.
The Skypark covers about 3 acres, with concrete pads, 110-volt power, Wi-Fi and a shade-cloth barrier that blocks stray light. A warm room and a roll-off-roof observatory are planned.
Star parties run nightly when the weather allows and last about two hours, using 20-inch and 24-inch Dobsonian reflector telescopes. You book them through Dark Texas Skies. Lodging includes 10 motel rooms in four duplex cabins, a 29-site RV park and camping.
California Desert Stargazing Hotels
In the California desert, La Casa Del Zorro sits in a Dark Sky Community and The Oasis at Death Valley runs two hotels inside a Gold Tier Dark Sky Park.
Borrego Springs became an International Dark Sky Community on July 31, 2009, the second in the world. Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, which surrounds the town, is an International Dark Sky Park. La Casa Del Zorro, on Yaqui Pass Road in Borrego Springs, offers stargazing and Borrego night sky tours.
La Casa Del Zorro's casitas come with one to four bedrooms and a private patio with a pool or hot tub. The resort also has garden view rooms and deluxe poolside rooms.
The Oasis at Death Valley sits inside Death Valley National Park on Highway 190 at Furnace Creek. It has two hotels: The Inn at Death Valley, open since 1927 with casitas, and The Ranch at Death Valley, a family hotel with cottages. An RV park sits on the property as well.
Death Valley National Park was designated a Gold Tier International Dark Sky Park in 2013. The resort says its skies regularly reach Bortle Class 2 and that the park sees more than 300 clear nights a year. Guided constellation tours leave from the resort with telescope viewing and laser-pointed constellations, the equipment is provided, and the tours need booking ahead.
The fall 2026 Death Valley Star Party runs November 6 to 7, from 7 to 10 pm at Fiddler's Campground. The Las Vegas Astronomical Society runs it, co-hosted by the park and Xanterra, and solar viewing takes place at the Furnace Creek Visitor Center.
Northern Rockies Stays in Idaho and Montana
The northern Rockies options are a DarkSky-certified resort in Idaho and a Montana guest ranch with guided telescope sessions.
Sun Valley Resort
Sun Valley Resort says it is a DarkSky Certified Resort and the first resort in the United States to earn that designation through DarkSky's Approved Lodging Program. It sits in the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve, designated in 2017, which covers 1,416 square miles of the Sawtooth Mountains from Ketchum and Sun Valley to Stanley. The resort calls it America's first Gold-Tier International Dark Sky Reserve.
Stargazing at Sun Valley Resort is self-guided, so plan your own nights out. Self-guided viewing spots include Bald Mountain near the Roundhouse, Trail Creek, Dollar Mountain Lodge, the Pavilion Lawn, the Whitecloud trails, the Hemingway Memorial and Galena Summit, about 30 miles north on Highway 75. Sun Valley Resort publishes a 2026 to 2027 Dark Sky Calendar.
Rooms are spread across the Sun Valley Lodge, the Sun Valley Inn, cottages, condos and townhomes.
Triple Creek Ranch
Triple Creek Ranch is a luxury guest ranch on West Fork Road in Darby, Montana. Its activity guides lead stargazing sessions with a high-powered Celestron telescope from a viewing bench high atop the hill. You can also stargaze from your private hot tub. Stargazing availability at Triple Creek Ranch shifts with the weather, so ask about dates when you book.
Glacier National Park Area
Waterton-Glacier International Dark Sky Park was provisionally certified in 2017 and fully certified in 2021, the first transboundary International Dark Sky Park.
Dark Light Collection plans glass pyramids on private land near the West Entrance of Glacier National Park and near Bryce Canyon, opening in 2027. Each pyramid is designed with a king bed placed for sky-gazing and a personal deck telescope. Side-by-side breakdowns of the Bryce and Glacier options are in Stargazing Stays Compared.
A Checklist for Choosing Stargazing Hotels
Choose a stargazing hotel by checking five things in order, starting with how dark the sky is.
- Sky darkness. Start with a certified International Dark Sky Place nearby. Where a stay publishes a Bortle class, use it: Marathon Motel states Class 1 and The Oasis at Death Valley states Class 2. The Bortle scale guide shows what each class looks like overhead.
- Moon phase. Book nights close to the new moon. If your dates are flexible, line them up with a meteor shower event, such as the Leonids star party in November or the Geminid night in December at Death Valley.
- Season. The Under Canvas Moab, Grand Canyon and Lake Powell-Grand Staircase camps close from late October or early November until March or April. The Oasis at Death Valley says conditions are strong year-round and flags November to January for major meteor showers.
- Room type. Decide whether you want to see stars from bed, through a Stargazer tent window or a glass dome, or from a deck, hot tub or telescope field.
- Night program. Under Canvas includes its stargazing at no charge, Marathon star parties are booked through Dark Texas Skies, and the Death Valley tours need advance booking.
Pick your travel month first, then shortlist the stargazing hotels whose season and nearest dark sky place match it.
A stargazing stay works best when you plan the room, the moon and the season together. Read why a dark sky matters to see what a night away from city light gives you.
